Our Green School Movement seeks to create "green consciousness" and build pride in the younger generation for being actors of environmental conservation by giving them due recognition of their participation.

For the concept of environmental stewardship to have a strong foundation, it needs to be tackled at the fundamental level. Establishing environmental knowledge in children builds this foundation and creates the next generation of ecologically conscious populace that will be more conscious of trees and the role they play in everyone’s lives.

How We Do It

The Problem

The Problem

Most environmental awareness programs for schoolchildren are usually in the form of a talk or a seminar where the effects of global warming and the importance of trees are taught to students. Though such programs provide inspiration to the children, the effects are short-lived. Schoolchildren these days are rarely involved in practical efforts related to environmental conservation. Very few schools give an opportunity to children to get involved beyond what the curriculum demands.

The Solution

The Solution

Combining the need for practical, hands-on environmental education and the availability of an already established government program, the National Green Corps (NGC), the Green School Movement was conceptualized by Project GreenHands and is being implemented in hundreds of schools each year in association with the Tamil Nadu Education Department.

A unique feature of the program is the inclusion of children from middle school and higher secondary standards for distributing and planting saplings. This means that apart from NGC students, all the children in the school of age group eleven to seventeen have the opportunity to get involved in tree plantation.

The saplings grown in schools are planted on the school premises and distributed to local residents and nearby residential locations for planting. The ownership of the trees is transferred to the local community who ensure the survival of the saplings..
